Obviously, many of you have probably had an abortion, how did you justify this 'murder'?
Many of you will probably believe that the 'fetus' is not human. But clearly after a few months old is has finger and stuff and later on develops a brain. Isn't that like saying a mentally retarded person isn't really a person because he/she is not fully functional?
Many women don't want it because it wrecks their figures, you could have abstained from s e x ( preferably) or at the very least used a condom. Just because your shallow that doesn't give u the right to kill.
And then theres the little thing called adoption. In the western world there are queques of people lining up to adopt. So no excuses there, even if it's a product of rape you can atleast adopt it out. As for the incest argument, it takes a few generations of inbreeding to mess up the gene pool to causes any bith defects, or so I've heard.
So, how did you justify it? How can you prove that it isn't murder. thanks.

Diavola - yes when the mother is going to die then I believe yes it is 'justified'.
But thats probably not even .001 of abortions. Most of the time its just people being complacent with someone elses life.

Simpleton guy - Yes, if all babies are born there will be a little bit of a problem.
However, its much easier to abstain or use a condom if you relaly must as its chances are better than nothing. Still the killing is not justified.

Memo- "scientifically speaking, its been proven that technically its not an actual human at certain stages. you do know that its not a "fetus" until a certain point in pregnancy right? initially, its just a blob of dividing cells. so are you saying you just dont support abortion when it becomes a fetus ?"
Regardless of the scientific bs, by aborting the "fetus" you are preventing someone from living a life. If preventing sum1 from having a chance at life isnt murder then im a purple monkey.
"
its none of your business what a woman does with her body. thats my defense for abortion. "
Actaully, once your pregnant your sharing your body. How selfish of women to think its just up to them. Theres the babyin there now, and then theres the male to consider who got you pregnant.

Condoms break!
Ohmygod who'd have thunk it!
I can understand where you're coming from, however. So, here it is, in the best I can explain without the useful science.
First off, there are tons of children that don't get adopted. I won't lie- newborns fly off there like tickle-me-elmos off the shelf. (Was that an inhumane comparison?) However, if everyone put up their children for adoption we'd eventually have a problem.
Now, here's my own personal question: What do you do in the case of a young girl, eleven or so, in which it's most likely both she and the baby will die if she gives birth? Do you tell her abortion is wrong and so let them both die? Or remove the tiny cluster of cells and allow one to live on?
I don't debate the morality of it because I think that's up to each person. My only requirement is that it be legal and accessible.

I've never had an abortion, and I don't think I could justify aborting my own child, so long as there were no genetic defects, but I still support a woman's right to choose what happens to her body.
It is unfortunate that we, as a society, still have unplanned, undesired pregnancies, but since this is recognized as a problem, why is abortion considered such an appalling solution?
Human life is not precious or sacred, millions of people die every year from preventable diseases and conditions, and so few people would honestly sacrifice any more than a small fraction of their income in the form of a donation to prevent these deaths. If you personally do not do everything in your power to prevent these deaths, how can you tell yourself that you still believe human life is that special?
You can call abortion murder if you want, but be aware, just because some animal activists may call eating a hamburger "murder", that does not make it so. Your beliefs, being that they are the result of an opinion, should not be inflicted upon the general public. Choice is a beautiful thing.

I think that any woman who gets pregnant (and ACCIDENTS do happen, you know, not all are carelessness) and doesn't want the pregnancy should have the baby, and then dump it on the man who participated in getting her pregnant, for him to raise.
Pay child support if he decides to keep it, but dump that kid on the man. Let HIM decide whether to give it up for adoption or raise it, not her. Let HIM go through the pain and hell of giving up a baby for adoption OR the pain and hell of raising it.
It's time the shoe was on the other foot for a change.
If every woman who became pregnant with an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy immediately gave up all her parental rights to the man and made him responsible for the kid, I bet there would be a LOT less pregnancies. Men would be a LITTLE more careful, eh?
Until then, women bear the brunt of getting pregnant, having to choose an abortion, adoption, or raise it, and that's a woman's choice because the man has no responsibility about it, except to sign away his parental rights if she gives the baby up (and no, guaranteed he won't shed any tears, while the mother will be heartbroken). He will have to pay child support if she keeps it, but I'd say that the majority of men don't bother.
So it's the woman's responsibility after becoming pregnant, for the most part, not the man's. Until that changes, it's HER CHOICE, and it's just too bad what anyone thinks about whatever choice she makes.
Seriously, I do think that if women began dumping the unwanted kids on the man and making it HIS responsibilty, things might change a bit. That would avoid abortion, and would also help teach all the "baby daddies" out there to keep their zippers shut from now on.
Sounds like a solution to me.

Certainly a very controversial question!
My dissagreement with your statements is that I believe a woman who was raped or a woman who's life is in danger if she goes through with the pregnancy deserves a choice. And many people practice safe sex, but sometimes accidents happen: ie: condom breaking.
A woman who has gone through the trama of being forced to have sex in a punishing way. Why should she be forced, then, to go through with having the baby that represents that painful time? You could argue that the unborn baby doesn't deserve to have it's life taken away before even starting. And yes, there is the choice of adoption. There are a number of things I am sure you are willing to debate back. I am just stating my opinion, as you did ask.
In the case of rape or danger to the mother, I feel an abortion is justified.
And no, I have not had an abortion. And I hope that I am never faced with making this decison.

well the entire subject comes down to your own beliefs. you can sit here and argue until you're blue in the face.
scientifically speaking, its been proven that technically its not an actual human at certain stages. you do know that its not a "fetus" until a certain point in pregnancy right? initially, its just a blob of dividing cells. so are you saying you just dont support abortion when it becomes a fetus ?
but religious people dont really have any proof, they just believe it is a human life at conception.
i have never had an abortion and its pretty ignorant of you to assume that anyone who supports abortion has had one. anyway im PRO CHOICE 100%. i do believe that it is murder, but its a womans choice regardless of how society feels. i probably would get one because i dont want children. birth control isnt 100 percent effective ever.
ironically, im 100% ANTI-CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. and i think if the government wants to send people down the green mile then women should have the right to do what they choose with their bodies.
its none of your business what a woman does with her body. thats my defense for abortion.

You are certainly a brave soul. I would have expected this question to have been in the R&S section as opposed to this one. While I do agree with you that a fetus is a living being and abortion is a form of murder. I cannot judge someone who makes that choice. There are grey areas and you are trying to only hit the black and white areas. If a woman's life is endangered and she is at five months gestation then the answer is abort the fetus to save the mother's life. A five month gestation fetus rarely(if ever) survives and if you don't abort then you will lose the mother and the child. I agree that abortion should not be used as a form of birth control. But you can't tie everything into a neat little package. It's also very easy for a man to make this judgment as you don't ever have to worry about becoming pregnant now do you?

Right or wrong, I suspect that in some instances a woman could possibly be so repelled by the notion of birthing a child from a particular failed relationship that she would be driven to abort the fetus.
I haven't been down that road (ever) but I can imagine how horrible that feeling must be (the one I described above).
What about the man or woman who has an extra-marital affair and the woman gets pregnant? Sick situation however I am sure it happens ...
What about the promiscuous, unmarried, low-income woman who gets pregnant and uses drugs, almost ensuring a developmentally disabled child? Personally I think these women should be sterilized, however, it is currently against the law.
(Btw, just for technical purposes, abortion is not considered murder because murder is illegal killing and abortion, within parameters, is legal). I'm not saying I condone abortion but am simply clarifying that our laws do not consider abortion to be murderous

No one can prove or disprove that it is murder, because like anything else, medicine and science can be skewed to match your beliefs (I am a biologist, BTW). But for all the pro-lifers, consider this.
The anti-abortion stance is one that peoples' religious beliefs and doctrine tells them is the right one. Not all pro choice people are anti-religion and not all pro choice people would have an abortion. But in spite of what is going on in America (I can only speak for here) this country was founded by people trying to run away from religious persecution. So I always wondered how pro life people (and anti gay marriage people, for that matter) can justify weaving their beliefs into the fabric of society, given the first amendment (which is being slowly eroded). There are people that don't have your same religious beliefs, but you want them to live by your religious doctrine. For this, you need to erase the first amendment. If your beliefs tell you not to have an abortion, sex, or anything else, that is your right, and I wholly respect that. But it is woman X's right to do these things, if she has not contradictory beliefs. That is the definition of a truly free and democratic, not theocratic, society. This is a point I often see missing from this argument.

I've never had an abortion or even been pregnant. But, unlike you, I can understand it if the child is a product of rape or incest. If you were a woman do you think you would actually be able to carry a child around if that was how it was conceived? What if you were a frightened twelve year old girl (rape, incest, or even consensual) who's parents would totally freak out, maybe even kick you out of the house, disown you? What if your own life was in danger by carrying the child to term? How dare you judge women for having an abortion when you can't even begin to understand why they'd have one.

I very rarely discuss this but MsScarlet had a very valid point and I'd like to reenforce it. I was faced with the decision of an abortion in the third month of my pregnancy because the doctors had determined the baby had no complete brain and no spine. I was married, had one other child, and badly wanted this baby but obviously it would not grow and function outside the womb. While I was in the hospital, on monitors, waiting to discuss this with the docs, some pro-life moron came in and lectured me on how I had no right to deprive a living child of a chance to be born. Abortion is wrong, blah blah. I asked him to go away and he handed me a bunch of brochures showing dead babies and left. Fortunately for all of us, the baby spontaneously miscarried the next morning, but to this day I resent the idea that someone would want to stop me from making that decision.
Abortion is not birth control but sometimes there are grey areas. You can't judge everything as good or bad.
