When my sprinkler system comes on, there is a significant drop in my household water pressure. The drop is so great that you can't even flush the toilet. Also, my water bill is up 80 dollars - 1000 gallons from last June. Does this mean there is a leak in my system somewhere?

Contact your county water dept. They can give you the recommended pressure you should have and then you can check it with an inexpensive gauge. We found problem and it ended up that the county had too many people on one main line and had to divide it. They didn't take into consideration all of us running sprinklers when they estimated homesite density for water usage!

It definitely sounds like you have a leak somewhere. If you know the people that installed the system, get them out to fix the problem. This could be a serious problem. The water has to go somewhere. However; Where I live all our household water comes from roof top cisterns. Mine is 1000 Liters and it doesn't go very far. An $80 cost for 1000 gallons is entirely out of whack. Talk to your water district. They might trouble shoot your system for free if the bill is not normal. So... try the Water district first, then the installer of the system. It should at least give you an idea of whats going on.

it may be a leak or your water pressure.

sprinkler sytsems take a lot of water pressure to run. ( more than in your house)

to find a leak- drip test. turn off your irrigation shut off valve, most are put within a foot of your water meter.

let it stay off for 10 minutes..

watch the drip indicator on your water meter ( the triangle on some)while you turn the irrigation valve back on.

if it even flinches a little bit or spins any.. then you have a leak that you need to fix.

if not, then your system has no mainline leak and stays pressurized.

its not uncommon for ones water bill to go up when using the sprinklers. even for it to go up a good bit

if your sprinkler system has good pressure and you arent finding any leaks on the zones. then it is your water pressure

try running them mid night- early morning, this is when the pressure is best and you will not see a pressure difference in your house, because you will be asleep.

hope this helps

I probably means the municipal water supply has a problem keeping up with demand, ask them what's going on.

probably...check your indicatior on you meter when everything is off and see if it is spinning. Walk the yard real good and check for soft spots.
