Some people substitute sparklers in place of candles or will use a combination of candles and sparklers.

If you get candles that are shaped like the age of the birthday person you can surround that candle with sparklers too.

Some people enjoy playing pranks and place the joke candles on that are difficult to blow out and often relight. Those can be bought in specialty stores....and everyone gets a good laugh!

There has always been something exciting about having all the lights off and a birthday cake lit with candles entering the dark room . Chasing away the darkness, making the present and the near future look brighter.

Perhaps the idea of birthday candles has to do with the following song. If you blow out all your candles, something good will happen and your wishes will come true. If you don't blow them all out then Satan has stolen your good wishes away from you :

VERSE 1

This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine;
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine;
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

VERSE 2

Won't let Satan (blow) it out
I'm gonna let it shine;
Won't let Satan (blow) it out
I'm gonna let it shine;
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

VERSE 3

Hide it under a bushel? No!
I'm gonna let it shine;
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I'm gonna let it shine;
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

VERSE 4

Let it shine till Jesus comes
I'm gonna let it shine;
Let it shine till Jesus comes
I'm gonna let it shine;
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

VERSE 5

Hide it under a bucket, NO!
I'm gonna let it shine
Hide it under a bucket, NO!
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Candles cannot be substituted. What else would you light on fire? If you don't blow out all the candles at once your wish wont come true.
