Don't forget Type O Bombay!

When typing blood, the different antigens on the surface of the blood cell indicate its type.

Type A = A antigen present
Type B = B antigen present
Type AB = both A and B antigens present
Type O = no antigen present ..... or is there?

Type O actually has what looks like a 'stalk' of an antigen. So ...

if antigen A looked like <----
and
if antigen B looked like ---->
then
antigen O would look like ----

In a blood Type O Bombay, not even the little 'stalk' is present. This makes it one of the rarest blood types in the world.

AB negative however my daughter is AB positive which is also rare. She feels she needs to give blood but AB+ can ONLY be given to AB+ so the donation is pointless. The blood bank need the most common group O most as it can be given to any patient

UK stats just for interest from the National Blood Service (I'm guessing they may have rounded them up/down so very close to the USA ....)

O+ = 37%
O- = 7%
A+ = 35%
A- = 7%
B+ = 8%
B- = 2%
AB+ = 3%
AB- = 1%

Would love to see the statistics for somewhere in Asia/Middle East just to check the global trends !!!

It depends on the region you mean. For instance, in America (the continent), type 0 is the most common, whereas in Europe it is less common.

Most rare blood type is AB negative - only about 0.45% of the population in the U.S.
B negative - 1.50%
AB positive - 2.55%
A neg - 6.30%
O neg - 6.75%
B pos - 8.5%
A pos - 35.70%
O pos - 38.25%
The incidence of different types varies around the US, probably because of different ethnicities, and methods [ or not ] of intermarraiges.
