Which model year is this? E36 or E46? Auto or manual?

Manuals tend to be less problematic when you have high mileage.

At this mileage, check the control arm (worn ball joints) and thermostat before you buy the car.

Of course, it would be good to know if the car was well taken cared of, with regular on time servicing.

Otherwise, you should do fine. Go for it.

At this mileage the control arms are definitely in need of replacement. Also if it hasn't been done the cooling system NEEDS to be overhauled. Also check the power window operation for stickiness and also the shocks for wear. At this age the suspension is getting to the end of it's life and should be replaced shortly depending on how it was driven. This includes all bushings, shocks, and springs. If you don't do all the labor yourself you will be looking at a hefty bill.

I personally wouldn't let the cooling system get past 70-80k and the suspension past 100k without replacement.
