I've heard that placing beer in cups/bowls/etc around the house can help get rid of roaches. does it really work?

yes it does,

the beer has a strong resemblance to rotting vegetable matter which attracts the roaches who will climb into the cup and can't get out.

option b is to drink the beer and get so blind you can't see them

No. Actually, it will make the problem worse. Roaches are attracted to the yeast in the beer.

The fact that the beer has alchohol in it wood kill the roaches after awhile. But there are cheeper ways to kill them.
