The Social Security does not call people except in response to a contact you made first.

It's a scam.

I know this is a SCAM!!! I'm on Social Security Disability and I'm here to tell you they do everything in writing. The only time they would call you is to respond to call from you or to give you an appointment time to come in to talk to them. The new Privacy act protects you from anyone asking for that kind of information. So if this person was asking for your account number it's a scam. The first thing you would receive from Social Security is an Award Letter stating the reason your getting a award and the amount. So stay clear and call your local law enforcement or call Social Security and let them know. Good Catch.

Of course its a scam. ANYONE calling you and asking for ANY type of account number is a scam. Giving them a routing number does no harm, if they what bank you use, they can get that anywhere. If you gave them your account number, they can probably figure out your bank without any additional information. Every bank has different check digit schemes built into their account numbers. 2 days on a PC and a handful of valid account numbers will decode the check digit formula. Once that is done, it take seconds to match an account number with the bank.

Sounds like a Scam to me. If the Social Security Administration is really trying to get a hold of you, they'd probably send you written documentation. They wouldn't just wire it to your account, unless you specifically requested it of them by you calling them, not the other way around..

If I were you and I still had the number they called you with, I'd give it to law enforcement. Bust them!!!

Cheers!!

yes it is a scam.

the way to protect yourself is to NEVER give out information. also, if you get a call like this, ask for their name and phone number and tell them you will call them back. Then contact your local police dept/DA's office. also, you can contact the local SS office (all SS offices have a local phone number listed in the phone book along with an 800 number).

SS does not 'award' money. if you have applied for any kind of social security benefits, you will be notified by mail, not by phone and they will NEVER ask for a bank account number.

all SS benefits are mailed to the recepient. to get direct deposit, you have to fill out paperwork at the SS office.

the social security dept. does not call you , they will send you something in the mail and you will have to report to their office, and scammers are the only ones who ask for your routing numbers, and bank account information, don't fall for it.!
