The lion was a symbol on the coat of arms for one of the older ruling families of the Czech Republic, the Zerotin Family. There is also the eagle that is on the coats of arms for the Lobkowiczov and Kolowrat Families. These have become the symbols of the Czech Republic today.

Czech Lion predates not only communism, but also foundation of Kingdom of Bohemia in 1197. It is associated with mythical king Brunswick and his loyal lion companion. The use of the lion as the symbol could be traced from Czech Achilles, the duke Bretislav, but definitely after I. crusade, from which Czech land was a significant contributor. Lion on the flag was used from 1125 onwards and part of the coat of arms from 1158 and 1192. The second tail on lion was added in 1270 by Ottokar II, the Iron and Gold king.

It is the lion of the arms of Bohemia. Bohemia was a Duchy, which became a Kingdom in 1196. The Kingdom is now mainly in the Czech Republic. On October 24, 1526, the Dukes of Austria acquired the Kingdom of Bohemia, which remained part of Austria-Hungary until 1919.
The silver double-tailed lion was introduced by King Ottokar II in 1249. Ever since the double-tailed lion remained on the arms of Bohemia. The lion now forms part of the national arms of the Czech Republic, as well as many towns in the Czech Republic such as Beèov nad Teplou, Chotebor, Peruc and Zinkovy.

The stance of the lion is loaded with symbology. Its called a lion "rampant", which means the animal - in this case the lion - is standing up in an 'attack' position - with its right for and hind legs higher than the left. Its typically the symbol of a monarch. The lion is noble, brave and fierce, and as such is a fitting symbol for a ruler, who seeks to emulate the lions nature.
