So I'm heading off to Hawaii with my family tomorrow, for 9 days! :D I'm definitely excited, but I want good teen-girl-mature-summer books. Anyone have any good books that are like Dreamland by Sarah Dessen or Just Listen by Sarah Dessen? Suspenseful, Maybe a little sexual/mature, take big/surprising turns...?

My students love Louise Rennison's books, Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. Humor, some sex, and lots of fun. Almost everyone loves these books.
They and I recommend Speak if you haven't read it, and several of them really liked Cut, which like Speak is very serious. My students and I like M.E. Kerr's books also.

If you haven't tried Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees and continued on reading her books, I think you would enjoy it. She's a great writer with moving characters.

Enjoy your trip.

How about the "How to Deal" movie tie-in book. There are two stories in it, "Someone like You" and "That Summer." Both deal with girls who are growing up.

There's also "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" by Peter Hedges, which isn't really about a teenage girl, but it deals with growing up and sacrificing for your family.

"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" is good too.

I can't think of any more right now, but I know there are a TON. I also really like Nicholas Sparks, I think his writing is bittersweet.

"The Virgin Suicides" by Jeffrey Eugenides

"The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold

"The Catcher in the Rye" by JD Salinger is about growin up as well, though it really doesn't feature a female protagonist.

Try the "Maximum Ride" novels by James Patterson. They are a little risque but not overwhelming. Your kids will love them.
