Lawn mower crankshaft is vertical what your really looking for is a horizonal crankshaft engine. Shifter carts use motor cycle engines and really get with it speed and dependability a 125cc honda moto cross bike engine can propel a cart to almost 90 miles an hour. I'd get an old motorcycle motor.
It has a clutch and gearbox built on the motor.
I'd use a 200 or 250 cc engine.
Try and get the rear wheel chain gear and disk break too.
