I detect a distinct odor of raw sewage while in our back yard. Any thoughts on what it might be (yes, we have a septic system-and no it's not backing up into the basement.)

Broken sewer line or sewer tank needs to be emptied.

You might want to call the local gas company in addition to investigating the sewage just to make sure there is no gas leak. Gas is normally odorless but there are certain additives that can be used to help detect the smell when a leak does occur. These additives can be rotten egg smelling or smell of sewage. Also consider the change of the winds and problems your neighbors might be having as these nasty smells can linger far.

If there is a broken pipe, the water would seep out onto the ground. Could be just a tiny break but not enough to cause standing water in the yard. Also, if the septic tank is getting full, it may just need to be drained.

A backed-up sewer pipe somewhere in your neighborhood. Suggest: Call your city's dept in charge of sewer treatment and complain about the odor.

Apparently your septic tank is full and the solids are going into your seapage bed. Your tank needs to be drained asap. Sorry been there done that.

It could be a clogged pipe, it could need emptied (if it hasn't been emptied in a while, just because it isn't backing up into ur house/yard doesn't mean it doesn't need emptied)
and it's possible its coming from some one Else's place but your getting the Oder
