Why do they bother wearing them on the back of their head if they arent using them

its usually outfielders that do this. they only need the shades when trying to catch a pop-fly in the sun...without shades you can sometimes lose the ball in the sun's glare. therefore someplayers only flip their shades down when going for a popfly....and w.t.f is wrong with the person above me? that is really strange!!! LOL!!!

Because it makes them look like Joe Cool Plus they wouldnt be able to see the game very well plus they use that black under thier eyes to block the sun so they dont really need sunglasses as it would interfer with them playing the baseball game at hand and it might even prevent them from spotting all the hunnies in the stands who are wearing short shorts and sandals with painted toes but be careful as they should be paying attention to the game inself and then there is the 7th inning stretch which happens in between the 7th innings

I have recently read that the ancient egyptians used to wear a similar sort of stuff, which in their case was kohl, to protect their eyes from the glare of the sun, which otherwise would be more fiercely reflected into their eyes from their sweaty cheeks. In fact, some egyptian workers are on record as having gone on strike when the bosses stopped handing out the kohl. It acted very roughly like sunglasses. Sounds like history repeating itself !

Because sometimes they don't need to use them, and sometimes they do. They can't put the glasses in their pocket because they might break them making a sliding catch.
Back in the '70s and '80s, fielders used flip-up glasses.

because the sky is full of clouds. Sometimes when the clouds are out, there is no need for the glasses, but when the sun comes "out of the clouds", glasses might help, especially if the sun is in direct view of homeplate. =p
