What would you think about starting a campaign to get both the Republicans and Democrats to denounce the terms "conservative" and "liberal" and then really debate the issues. Why can't we be for stem cell research and against abortion; why can't we be for legalizing the immigrants that are already here and stopping more from coming in; why can't we have universal health care and lower taxes by taking away all the lifetime privileges of politicians?
Middle-of-the-roaders unite! Please.

Lynette S - you missed the point Sweetie - if you are for abortion does that mean you have to agree with the entire "Liberal" or democratic agenda?
Don W - Fence? So, using that logic, there's no such thing as moderation - I'm either drunk or sober, fat or skinny, own a home or homeless - middle-of-the-road. It's a real place.
Thanks to all for such great input - let the real debates begin - I hope!

It would appear by the answers before me, that that “media”, be it print, radio or television all have a hand in shaping our political system, as we know it today.
It seems that nobody can actually think for himself or herself without the security blanket of one form of “media” or another.
Sort Answer:
The “Media” is making billions upon billions of dollars staging dog fights between the pundits.
Long Answer:
I’d give you the long answer, but I don’t have one. It’s going take someone much smarter than I to persuade the “Media Moguls” that everyone prefers a happy ending, rather than a tragic one.
Or… How to convince “Mainstream America” we really don’t need the “Media” to think for ourselves.

Interesting thought. That would put most of talk radio out of business so I would think that the pundits would fight the change most. How do you throw verbal bombs if you can't pick a target?
To answer laissez faire guy, if what you say was true then why would there be a need in every election for the most liberal or most conservative candidate to have to then fight back to collect as much of the moderate vote as they can. Successful leaders command from the center and let the fringes do what they will. Leaders who work from the fringes, tend to marginalize their influence.

Although the 'for stem cell research while against abortion' thing can only work if your using stem cells not from fertilized embryos. But that's really the whole discussion about it anyway.
The thing is, I like people going back and forth. All I wish was that there was more moderates in Congress, maybe a third party.

I appreciate your idea, but it's people with fire and ideas that get things done.
There's never been a book written titled "Great Moderates in History."
I'm perfectly happy to have a politically charged environment. Where there is agreement, great work out a solution. When there's not, let the battle begin!
UPDATE To Deep Thought - No, leaders may win elections by pandering to the middle, but great leaders don't govern from the middle. They govern from their core convictions and philosophies. That doesn't make them fringe necessarily. An example: Reagan governed on the ideas that tax cuts would spur the economy, and confronting and actively opposing communism would end it quicker than appeasing it. Strong convictions and philosophies, but not fringe.

Because that would require the use of intelligence instead of simply reacting in a kneejerk way to sound bites and fear mongering, this is unlikely to happen. People would have to be willing to expend the energy to actually do something instead of just sitting back letting those who make our decisions for us, of whichever persuasion, tell us what to do. Labeling is a very convenient way to avoid reason.

I would love to see senators and congressmen think for themselves. I'd love to see voters think for themsevles.
I'd love to see campaigns run on issues not attacks on each other.
