Parachute, radio pinger. If you like determinism rather than geocaching, add a GPS chip and broadcast the touchdown coordinates. If you are really lazy, make that a GPS cell phone and have it call you (assuming there is local reception).

Better still, add a voice chip that says "JIHAD!" into the phone and Homeland Severity will pick it up and deliver it to your door.

you need to find the high power model rocketing group website.

Basicly:

They install adevice that senses altitude.

While atlitude is not going down, the device won't deploy the recovery parachute.

When altitude is going down and gets below the trigger altitude it actuates the parachute deployment.

Some of them have staged parachutes, deploying a small chute to reduce speed before popping the big one at a lower altitude.

If they popped the chute at the maximum height... they could drift for MANY miles.
