I can answer both questions with one series of books - the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fford. These are funny, intricate, intelligent books with constant references to other books (the more you've read of the classics, the more of the in-jokes you'll get, but they stand alone well and might even make you want to crack some of the books you don't know). Start with 'The Eyre Affair' and if you like it there are three more in that series, and another two in his next series, and supposedly more coming in both. I really can't recommend them highly enough.
And now that I think of it, if you want a good mystery that's a little off the beaten path, check out 'Motherless Brooklyn' by Johnathan Lethem. The protagonist is a thug-come-pi with Tourette's syndrome, and it's told in the first person. Incredible.

If you like reading non-fiction, about what goes on nowadays - I recommend these two -
1) "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader"
written by Bradley K. Martin
2) "Rogue Regime"
written by Jasper Becker
These two well-written books give an insight about the North Korean Government.
Fiction?
Try all the books written by Clive Cussler.
The hero is Dirk Pitt, with his sidekick Al Giordino. These are well-written.

1. Try "A Great and Terrrible Beauty" by Libba Bray. She's brilliant, but she only has two books out in the series so far. The third one is expected in February.
2. "Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer. She also has only two books out in the series, but her third comes out August 7!
These are both incredible series. Enjoy.
