This show is not Qauntum Leap
Here are the details that I remember.
This guy has this thing like a compass/pocket watch, he goes back in time to change something in history. This compass is red until he changes the problem, then it turns green. Along the way, he runs into a young boy, maybe a teenager and his dog. The boy had dark brown curley hair. The boy and dog goes along from that point on to help the other guy change history. The show was cancelled when the guy playing the lead was killed on set by a prop gun. Can anyone tell me what this show was called?

It is Voyagers, starring Jon-Erik Hexum, who later died after shooting himself with a prop gun at point-blank range. The show was not canceled because Hexum was killed. The show was canceled in 1983 by NBC, a year before he accidentally shot himself.

The show you're thinking of is Voyagers!, but it was cancelled in 1983 - a year before the accidental death of Jon-Erik Hexum. He actually died on the set of Cover Up in 1984.

Hmm...Sounds a lot like Jon-Erik Hexum in the short-lived 80s TV show: Cover Up!
Hexum, an up and coming star, shot himself by accident with a prop gun, thus ending a fine career.
Oh PS: After my answer went through, I did an IMDB search on Jesus's answer: Voyagers! Guess who was in it?! Yeppers, Jon-Erick Hexum!!
So methinks you got the show you wanted; along with the actor only after he was in it! Killed two birds with one, um, prop gun, eh? Hope it all helps....LOL!!!

The show was called Voyagers. Jon Erik Hexum was the actor who starred int it.
