Liberals aren't anti-business. They're more likely to be against the unwholesome alliance between business and government. The three liberal billionaires you mentioned all appear to be more honest and charitable that don't tie themselves to political apron strings. The Carlyle Group and Halliburton, for example, make billions from their ties to the Bush-Cheney White House. Yet, one of Carlyle's first investors was a family by the name of binLaden...and Halliburton is moving its corporate headquarters out of the U.S.A. to avoid paying federal taxes on the billions it has earned from its government war contracts. That kind of indecency, immorality, and lack of ethics doesn't seem to be as prevalent in businesses run by liberals. -RKO- 07/02/07

I believe such persons either
(i) feel great guilt at their huge wealth and promote socialist/communist causes (and liberal politicians) to benefit "the little people" to assuage their guilt (just like liberals who drive big SUVs buy carbon offsets to assuage their guilt for polluting), or
(ii) are Republican at heart but worry that someday there might be a workers' revolution in this country (similar to the 1917 Russian Revolution) due to the continued class warfare tripe spewed by the Left, and by having appeared for some time as a good liberal and financial supporter of liberal causes, hope to hang on to some of their wealth, perhaps even their lives, when most is being confiscated by the new revolutionary government, or
(iii) they were born, genetically, as a liberal (and just as a true liberal cannot add 2 + 2 and get 4 without checking first to see how the 2's are feeling that day to see if the answer might be 4.00008 with happy 2's or 3.999991 with unhappy 2's) but still managed to make a fortune through very smart and sometimes lucky business decisions, but genetically they are still liberals, or
(iv) they are just buying insurance (the Mafia called this protection money) from being hassled now by the government, and in particular, if they think there will soon be a communist (oops, I mean Democrat) takeover of all branches of the government and they are positioning themselves accordingly; there's a lot more of what you describe happening now, since Jan 2009, is getting pretty close and the Republican field looks week , or
(v) a blending of some or all of the above.
It is interesting to note that Bill Gates was not very philanthropic, nor did he give much in the way of campaign contributions to the Democrats or promote liberal causes when the Clintons were in office. Consequently, he was made an example of by the Clintons when they sicced Janet Reno on Microsoft with that god-awful anti-trust lawsuit in which they tried to break Microsoft into little pieces that would have had to have been sold off. Bill prevailed in court, but the costs were immense. Bill could have avoided that whole expense and misery had he just donated a paltry million or two to the Clintons each year. The Clintons did not set the bar, they became the bar. Now, other, rich business people have taken note. Neither Gates nor any other rich business owner will make that mistake today after witnessing what happens when the Dems are in power and proper dues have not been paid.
Therefore, if you become a very rich business man in the U.S., you'd better be giving to the Dems, esp. to a Dem president, and enough until it hurts. The only difference between Dem politicians and the Mafia is that the Dems haven't yet killed a Republican or non-Dem-donor, rich businessman for not giving...although, I would suggest that non-giving, non-liberal-causes-promoting rich business men hire armed guards to keep an eye on their favorite thoroughbred horses in the stalls at night.

I have never believed that Leftists (Socialists) were anti-business in general. The only Leftists who are exceedingly anti-business are Communists. Most other forms of Socialism (Fabianism, Solidarism, Democratic Socialism) and even Fascism is supportive of the market system. What they are opposed to is the free-market system. Which is the market system unfettered by overbearing regulations. Every Socialist movement in history has been financed by wealth individuals. Even the Marxist movement in Czarist Russia was financed by the wealthy Russians and Western Europeans. Of course this was akin to Churchill’s famous line: feeding the crocodile hoping that you will be eaten last. There is a huge difference between capitalism per se and free-market capitalism.

We don't believe that at all. We think Democratic Polititians are Anti-Business. But only selectively.
Rupert Murdoch donates heavily to Hillary, therefore she dosn't blast Fox News. When someone says they want to "Take Excess Profits" from Oil Companies, that scares us. Whether or not you hate Oil Companies, that sets a dangerous precedent dosn't it? Especially since she has made a fortune off of Haliburton and Exxon stock.
Bill Clinton, Waged war with Microsoft.
Corporations are taxed 3 times. Income, Dividends, and Gains. They want more.

Your counter-argument is more thorough than theirs generally are. And they don't like to think that three of the most successful businesses ever are run by liberals, especially since they're typing on their Windows OS computer and listening to an iPod, all while eating lunch from KFC (Berkshire-Hathaway owns a majority of KFC.)

They love to push that line. It is that liberals are against corrupt business that is pushed by corrupt republicans at the expense of masses so that they can retire on their yachts in the Caribbean smoking Cuban cigars.
