My husband thinks it means riding in a car while wearing dirty underpants. I say it means driving with drugs or possibly driving drunk. Who's right? There's a foot massage riding on it.

This originates from the old wild west and the stagecoach. There was the teamsman who drove the horses and his armed guard sat next to him with a shotgun , hence the term "riding shotgun". So anybody sat next to the driver is riding shotgun.
