Baking soda. good old Arm and Hammer. Sprinkle it all over the inside of the box and top of the lid. If you can, flip the box on all sides with the lid closed to help distribute it on all surfaces. Let it be overnight or so. Then vacuum it out. This should do the trick. Then go to the grocery store and buy one of those Arm and Hammer stick ups that are made for the fridge. Place it in the box for maintenence.

I get alot of antique wood furniture and it often has a foul smell. What I find works best is the scented sachet bags you find at local country stores. I use Eucalyptis, and in a matter of days, it overpowers the smell of whatever was there before. :) Good luck!
