I AM LEGEND by Richard Matheson is excellent. There is a trilogy by SM Stirling called The Domination(all in one volume) that isn't so much scary as graphic and horrid-its a great story but intense to the point of nightmares.
The Four Seasons by Bachman is good-its 4 short novels written by Steven King but under a fake name. A couple were made into bad movies. The stories are: The Long Walk, The Running Man, Apt pupil and I can't remember the 4th.
I might also suggest the work of HP Lovecraft-terrifying stuff!
Then of course there is King's other stuff, Dean Koontz and the VC Andrews Flowers series.

The Beast Within by Edward Levi is one of the most unique and scary books I have ever read.
Here are some others:
The Stand by Stephen King
Tommyknockers by Stepen King
The Ruins by Scott Smith
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks

If you like reading non-fiction, about what goes on nowadays - I recommend these two -
1) "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader"
written by Bradley K. Martin
2) "Rogue Regime"
written by Jasper Becker
These two well-written books give an insight about the North Korean Government.
Fiction?
Try all the books written by Clive Cussler.
The hero is Dirk Pitt, with his sidekick Al Giordino. These are well-written.
