Depends upon how much you're looking to spend and what choices you're considering. The first guy is correct- the particular processor matters more than the brand.
Intel's Core 2 Duos are the best desktop processors on the market right now, so if they fit your budget, great. But at a given price point, you might be able to build an overall better system going with AMD X2. Spend $100 less on a CPU and get more RAM, or a much better video card, etc...
p.s. The CNET review link in the post after this one is from 2005, well before Intel introduced the Core 2 Duo series of CPUs. It's comparing the old Pentium-D line of dual-core processors against the AMD X2 line. For more up-to-date performance comparisons among current generation CPUs, check:

As an IT professional I can tell you from experience that Intel chips are generally more reliable. AMDs tend to overheat more and die out.
However AMDs clock better generally on Gaming Speeds and cost a bit less.

I would go with an AMD...only because I have had an Intel....Mine burned up in a year.

depends on the processor more than just the brand the intel core 2 duo line especially the E6600 is blistering fast and very overclockable
