The Count of Monte Cristo. It's 1500+ pages, but it's well worth the read.

For realistic fiction I would recommend one of the "Blackford Oaks" series by William F. Buckley, its a Spy novel series, where Will/Bill has researched actual events and deduced hidden details and created spy novels, similar to what Shaksphere did in the case of Julius Caesar.
"Marco Polo If You Can" William F. Buckley, there are others, this one I enjoyed, haven't read the others yet, but have one other in my small library.
I don't read much fiction, so I don't know about a book on conformaty with regards to social pressures.

Hey!
I currently just finished reading Hide and Seek and Finders Keepers both of which writen by Catherine Palmer. I was hooked to these books! Hide and Seek is the sequel to Finders Keepers. These were very well writen books and I think you should give them a try. In the begining of the books, they arn't as intresting as you would expect. Read a couple more chapters and you'll see what I was talking about. They are both beautifully well written and I know you will enjoy them.
These books have love, backstabbing gossip, secrets, mystery, and so much more.
I hope you found this helpful and hope you enjoy these books!!! -Danny
Finders Keepers #1 by Catherine Palmer
Hide & Seek #2 by Catherine Palmer (second in the series, there isn't a third)

Right now I am reading "Pleged: The Secret Life of Sororities."
It's about a woman who follows four girls in different sororities.
It tells about how they have to deal with conforming to fit in with the rest of their sorority and are pressured into doing things, such as breaking up with their boyfriends, among other things. It's pretty suprising at times as well. There are also clips from sorority "handbooks" that are pretty hillarious explaining what sorority girls should and should not do.
I find it very interesting, and it sounds like it is along the lines of what you are wanting to read.

If you like reading non-fiction, about what goes on nowadays - I recommend these two -
1) "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader"
written by Bradley K. Martin
2) "Rogue Regime"
written by Jasper Becker
These two well-written books give an insight about the North Korean Government.
Fiction?
Try all the books written by Clive Cussler.
The hero is Dirk Pitt, with his sidekick Al Giordino. These are well-written.

I would look up Kevin J. Anderson's Ill Wind. It is about something that's supposed to take care of oil and gas in our waters but...I don't like to give spoilers. There is something scientists are testing at this moment so similar that it's scary. He usually does sci-fi. Michael Chright has a novel, Prey, about nanobytes. It is also something that is in an advanced testing phase by researchers that could challenge us in the near future. I have even read his Jurassic Park trilogy, not the movie versions.
