is that like total amount of length and width? some houses have alot of squarefeet but sometimes the way its built theres not a whole alot of floor space?

As above, Length multiplied by Width measured in feet....but I agree that some large square footage rooms have no space.
Prime example is an L shaped room, no matter where you are in the room, there's no space, but the square footage can be quite large.

A square foot is a measure of area. One square foot is equivalent in area to a square shape of 12 inches or one foot on each side. An area 2 feet wide by 10 feet long would be 20 square feet, etc.

Square feet is all the floorspace in the house (the sum of all the length x width of the rooms). Ask if this calculation includes the garage and/or pation (sometimes it does, sometimes just the enclosed living area). It does not count the yard.

If you're used to Square Meters, divide the Square Feet number by 9. An apartment that's 1000 sq ft is roughly 110 sq mt

Square footage is square footage no matter what the living space is. Square footage in the amount of space in the home periods.

If you want to know living space, then you need to find out the dimensions of each room. That will be the only way to figure out actual living space.

The square footage is an overall measurement. It includes space occupied by closets, walls, cabinets, dead space behind cabinets, areas under stairs, etc.

12x12 inches. or 4 12 inch lines that form a square is a square foot. a square of a foot.
