Bought this house, dishwasher came with it. Its in bad shape, and I found out that the system needs a good cleaning. How do you clean it out?

You run a cup or two of vinegar through an empty cycle and it will clean the dishwasher....if it is in really bad shape they sell a dishwasher cleaner that you put in an empty cycle that works really well...I think it is by Jet Dry it is not very expensive at all either

Jet-dry is too expensive.. I just use powdered drink mix either unsweetened/sweetened doesn't matter just run it on an empty cycle with the hottest water and that should clean it... You might have to do this method a couple times if the dishwasher is in really bad shape.. Good luck
