You should check out North by Northwest.
Hitchcock was a brilliant director. He could create suspense out of almost nothing.

While, I'm not certain he's the absolute best, he should definitely be in the top three. I'd pick Clint Eastwood as a top director, also. I didn't realize he'd directed Play Misty for Me. Like Marnie, I enjoy watching it when it's on TV.
I've been re-thinking my answer. Maybe Hitchcock is that good. He could capture your attention without using anywhere near the amount of special effects that are used today.

I think Hitchcock was the best suspense director ever but I don't know about overall director.
I was just thinking last night that if I was an actor and could work with any director that is dead I would want to work with Robert Altman because he is supposed to be a good director to work with as an actor. While I admire Hitchcocks work I know he was a difficult director to work with.

While I think that Hitch may have been the director who most clearly put his personal touch in the films he created, other directors (John Ford, Kurosawa, Fellini, Howard Hawks, Ingmar Bergman, to name just a few) were equal or better.
Hitchcock's genius seemed to be in creating audience-involving suspense and an empathic understanding of the darker passions of humanity. Vertigo, Shadow of a Doubt, Psycho, Notorious, are all masterpieces of movie-making, and nearly all his films have moments of terrific cinema; yet the other directors I have mentioned have a broader and more universal scope in their visions.
Hitch was the best in his field of interests, and his nearly complete control of his creations was close to unique.

A personal favorite of mine is called Rope (which is based on a true story). It's about two rich friends who kill someone to see what it feels like and to see if they can get away with it. Also love Rear Window, Frantic, Psycho, and Strangers On A Train.

Yes... he started a whole new age of movies. If it wasn't for him, where would we be with horror and suspense movies?
