In theory, yes. The Convention can nominate any candidate, including one who didn't run in the primaries. If no candidate has a majority in the convention, the backers of different candidates might pick someone like Gore as a compromise.
There was a time when this sort of thing actually happened. Conventions which went through multiple ballots, often winding up with a nominee who hadn't earlier been considered one of the leading names, happened several times in the 19th Century. But it hasn't happened in at least 80 years, and isn't likely to happen again in the future.

I don't know if it works like that anymore. Used to be done in back room politics, which made the conventions interesting. He could win, I think.
