Most quarters are stamped with "D" or "P" from the different mints, but I have one stamped with an "S". I didn't know there was another mint, if there isn't, what's the "S" for?

The quarter you have came from a proof set, you must have noticed it is brighter than the other coins do to it having a mirror finish. George Washington's bust may also be frosted. Some how it must of came from a broken up set. Some kid could have spent his dads quarter. The S is for San Francisco. There has been a mint in San Francisco since 1854. 1974 was the last year that mint struck coins for general circulation after that it struck, only special collector coins called proofs. A proof coin is made with special dies, planchets and are struck more than once.

I believe there's a die in San Francisco, CA - that could be what the 'S' refers to.
