Because he had hope. He hoped that someday, he could do his job, which was to deliver the package. In the end, he stayed true to himself, and he accomplished his job.

Remember, the movie was called Cast Away, meaning he has been cast out from his normal life. It was not castaway, which means he was adrift from a ship. He was cast away from life, and the package represented his real life, the one he wanted to get back to.
