Dual Core and Core 2 Duo are both two processors made by intel but that is where the difference ends.

The Dual core was pretty much two Pentium 4 processors put together on one chip. It worked and sped up the computer any time you were multitasking. Both of the processors on the dual core chip were slower than a single Pentium 4 processor so if you were just running ONE game and nothing else the dual core wasn't that great. Of course if you were burning a DVD and trying to do anything else it was awesome.

After that Intel pretty much stopped the trend to make computer clock speeds go faster and faster because it was getting harder and harder to do. In response they decided to make the processors more efficient. In short they did more with the speed they had, a LOT more. When they slowed down the processor but made it more efficient a few things happened. 1) It ran cooler, 2) it used less energy, 3) it did things a lot faster than the older technology.

The newer efficient core was the Core Duo, when they then optimized further and it became the Core 2 Duo.

Result: The Core 2 Duo is far and away preferable to the Dual Core.

Same thing. Dual core means pretty much two processors in one. Core 2 Duo is Intel (the chipmaker)'s marketting brand name for their Dual Core processors.
