If you have wireless connection you can trade pokemon with people around the world. You can log in a put up a pokemon for trade. Pick the pokemon from your party that you would like to trade, then specify the pokemon, gender, and lvl range that you want to trade for and then the pokemon dissapears. Log out and go back on later, and if someone has traded for it, you will get the pokemon you wanted.

If you want to search the GTS for available trades, pick the second option. There you can specify the pokemon, gender, and lvl range you want to look at and three trades will show up. You can click on the people you want to trade with and see what they want for their pokemon. If you see a trade you want, log out, get that pokemon, log back in, and find that same trade again (note...if you trade a certain amount of times, five trades will show up when you log in and then later, 7 trades will show up).

Basically is like an Auction House. You see a pokemon in the wild or by a trainer, you go there and search for it. People put pokemons there with an offer and if you can meet that, you can trade for it. Usually, pokemon you can search on GTS = your pokedex. You can't look for mew or mewtwo if you haven't seen them in game.
