What is the purpose of creating Euronext instead of keeping the European index separate?

The merger has nothing to do with any European index. Euronext is an exchange. Merging the NYSE with Euronext will allow the two exchanges to share administrative and clearing resources, reducing costs for market participants. It will make it easier for US and European companies to trade on both exchanges resulting in better pricing and longer trading windows.
