ever heard the expression, "they're just not made like they used to"? 10 years is great for an old vacuum. if you buy a new one though, it will only last 2-3 years. and if you try to repair the old one, it will cost more than a new one, and it still wont work that great. so choose what you will. i opt for a new one.

I would get a new one. It sounds like the motor. You might check to see if the belt to the hoover is still around the beater bar under the sweeper. If the belt is broke it will make loud noise and it will not pick up just put a new belt on if this is the problem. Also make sure too while under the sweeper that there is not a clog into the hose where the bag meets the hose in the back. I wish I was able to be present to give your vacuum a look I could tell ya what is wrong.
Just to add if you buy a new vacuum the simplicity is the best I think on the market. It is light weight the attachments are on the back and the vacuum has a good filtering system. I clean for my brothers janitorial business for over 15 years and have used every brand of vacuum. The simplicity is what we use for the cleaning business.
The hoover brand is good and Erika too.
I use the simplicity in my own home.

10 Years for a Hoover. That is pretty good! They usually only last about 2 or 3 years max. Do not try to fix this vacuum. It did it's time and you got alot of life out of it (for a Hoover). Even you you get it cleaned out and tuned up with a new brushroll and belts, it is still going to be the same noisy old Hoover and once they become that age everything starts to detoriate and next thing you know it the motor stops working. I highly suggesting a new vacuum. One that will be around longer and you will be much happier with. The Miele Callisto is a great vacuum. It is more expensive but it is a one time deal. Once you buy it, you are good for 20 to 25 years (that is how long they last!) The Miele Callisto has an awesome SEB 217 Powerhead. It has the best edge cleaning ever. If you use this vacuum to pick up bird seed on a carpeted floor along the edges of your wall it will pick up ever piece guarantee it. You can use the powerhead on the bare floor which does a wonderful job. It has a squeegee underneath to really seal to the ground as well as all rubber wheels that will not scratch your floors. But if you want to use an even nicer tool it comes with an SBB 300-3 Floorbrush which is amazing. It has super wide holes all around and it will pick every up as well. it barely feels like you are pushing anything and it has a knuckle which allows you to twist and turn into and spot you want like behind the toilets, buffet table, couches and the floorbrush itself is low enough to get under the baseboards and kickjams. The filtration is 99.95% effective at 0.3 microns which is amazing. Thanks to its HEPA filter and super intensive clean bags the vacuum is able to achieve this kind of filtration. If you think this is just another figure think again check out this video:

That shows that the air is actually being purified as it comes out of the machine. The suction is also amazing. It has a new vortex motor which is amazingly effective and quiet. This is the quietest vacuum on the market when it is two notches from full power (their quiet setting) it makes less noise than a pot of boiling water (much quieter than an old Hoover). So you can vacuum at night when the kids are sleeping. It also has a crush proof hose and an amazingly ergonomic hose handle. The wands are made a graphite (that is what they make golf clubs and airplanes out of). All of the cords are integrated in the hose and wands so there are no external cords to deal with. I bought my Miele Callisto from Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew for only $699 with free shipping and no tax (because I do not live in new york). They were wonderful to deal with and they made my shopping experience a pleasant one. Here is their number (you have to call them up to get that price because that price can not be found anywhere on the Internet):

Tell Lisa and Joe Kevin told you about it.

It depends on how much it would cost to repair it vs. buying a new one. Sometimes when they loose suction they just need to be cleaned or have a clog somewhere. You can always check into what a repair may cost and start looking at a new one a decide if you want to mess with it.
But as far as hoovers go, they are a good brand but 11 years may be a good lifetime as well. My grandmother on the other hand has a Kirby that is older than I am and it's still tickin' though I think my new Bissell does a better job than the old Kirby did.

It depends on the type of vacuum you have... If it's 10 yrs. old it may just need a belt replacement, clean and check... It does't cost that much and it's better than buying a cheapie replacement that "might" last you acouple years.. My mother in law has a kirby and she got it refurbished as a wedding gift the thing still runs..after 36 yrs. +. Same for her mother in law except she got her Kirby over 60 yrs ago.. She finally gave it away because it's too heavy for her ! About every other year or so she takes it in for an annual overhaul and basically comes home with a new vacuum... Plus, it's kinda recycling getting a perfectly good vacuum fixed is good for the environment.. I would at least look into getting it fixed.. If you think it costs too much at least you tried and heck the repair place may take your vacuum fix it up and sell it... Which is still better than just throwing it away...

Most vacuums only last 8-10 years. I still have a 15 year old Panasonic that is still effective.
It is probably not worth repairing since the bill would exceed the vacuum's value. If you have no emotional ties to it (I didn't think so) then try Consumer Reports.com or your library for good models.
Dyson, Miele, Hoover, Oreck, Kenmore among others vary in quality and price tremendously and in vacuum cleaners, price does not mean they are better. Oreck and Miele in particular do not score high in quality and function, but are extremely expensive.
