There has only been approximately 10% of the Earth's aquamarine life that has been discovered and cataloged.
The other 90% remains to be discovered and named.
Who knows if they exist or not? Their upper half of their body is humanlike. So it stands to reason that with a humanlike brain they would be intelligent too.
They would be smart enough to elude hunters and fisherman as well as other oceanic explorers.
Perhaps they have their own radar system in the sea that when anything owned and operated by modern technological humans comes near their habitat, an alarm goes off and they are able to camoflage or hide from our detection.
Or perhaps even immerse themselves far deeper than we have safely been able to travel
Do they exist? Nobody really knows for certain. There are myths and legends. Woven into their fabric is an element of truth.
When the world was first young and people thought the world was flat and that they would fall off, perhaps mermaids felt safer to explore the entire sea without fear of harm.
Perhaps they were even curious about early people. Perhaps they learned to fear humans. Perhaps they witnessed too much of our cruelty throughout human history and have been hiding from us ever since.
Perhaps Manatees were mistaken for mermaids or perhaps they are living, breathing, decoys sent by the mermaids to throw us off the track.
Do mermaids exist? The verdict should still be out on this one.

As far as sailors at sea they had an endless source of protein, what they lacked was an abundance of fresh fruit.
British sailors solved that problem when they found limes and began carrying them on their sea vessels.
They found that limes kept better and were easier to pack than most other fruit.
This is how they earned the nickname Limey, Limies, Lymey or Lymies. Limes are a great source of vitamin c as are lemons, oranges, grapefruit etc.

who's to say, a lack of evidence in the positive does not constitute evidence in the negative, and there are American early story's from sailors to give anecdotal evidence to the positive, however many of them are found to be drunken braggarts, and there so called "beauties" were latter dismissed as manatees, i would say no, but don't give up hope, there's much to this world we simply don't know, and the more we discover the less adequate our answers seem, some times

These fishermen have been capturing something in their nets for too many years, and their description do not match the government description at all ..... But due to personnel experiences I am forced to say yes beyond all doubt yes they do exist... But they are not as cuddly as one believes for they do have mankind in their diet and that is a known fact believe it or not period............................

no. the way that was brought up was that sailors never had protein when they were sailing and they got scurvy. and if they got scurvy that meat they sometimes hallucinate and they see thing that aren't there. they also see thing but are changed. the sailors claimed that they saw mermaids but they were actually manatees!!! that is why saliors then drank rum because it had protein.
good luck with your question!!
