The harder the wood the better, in this case it would be maple.

I guess I have to be the old fart that says ash. I know a lot of the big leaguers are using maple now, but the last few years I have noticed a lot more bats shattering then I did before. Just this weekend, Ted Lilly got hit in the face with a part of a bat. Luckily, he just got a little scratch, but I would think MLB would want to look at why so many bats seem not only to be breaking, but just getting ripped apart lately.

Maple bats are a lot better. The quality of the wood as well as the torque you can put on the bat. I work for a baseball company and one of my clients is the SAM bat company and they have one of the better bats out there.Solid Canadian Maple.

I believe most wooden bats are made from some sort of pine.
