For instance, if you want to write a how-to guide or a book of advice on a certain activity, but need to use tips from various other people, how does that work?

Do you pay each person or have them sign something saying they give this info to you to use?

Thanks for any advice on this process : )

If you collect them publicly (like Heloise) then the column policy is normally published permitting reuse. If you collect them privately then it is a little more complicated and the safest way is to get a release. The normal grounds for complaining would be copyright because you used their exact words (creative effort) because you can't copyright or patent ideas only expression of those ideas in specific form. I get permission to use ideas and suggestions on my website whether sent to me or posted elsewhere. I do not get permission to use short questions where I am publishing my answer.

It is customary to acknowledge the sources of one's information if it is not an original idea. There is nothing wrong in writing a book using collected ideas or tips, as long courtesy of giving credit ti sources is followed

Hey, magpiemccabre...then do you ask them where they got the information and document that also?

In the book "Would You Believe" by Sydney J. Harris he only says that these are "Things I Learned en Route to Looking Up Other Things" as taken from his daily syndicated column....

Each fact is not accredited to anyone...

first, get a book on MLA documentation. If you've ever written a research paper, you know that you MUST cite your resources of information, and the MLA documentation book will tell you how to do it!

It is best to write your sourses and ask for permission, explaining that you will cite them! Tell them in detail about your project and what you hope to do with it! You might even find a few new tips!

=/ I'm sorry, but that doesn't sound like a lot of or abnormal drama. It sounds like a normal teenage life. How about you keep a journal and then write about yourself once you've actually lived some life. if that isn't helpful to you, then I suggest fictionalizing your life a bit on paper.

if you put them in quotes and tell who gave you that tip, yes!
