Is there a system for alphabetizing punctuation?

Question

If there was a list of words, some starting with punctuation marks, is there a way to alphabetize them? All I can think to do is convert the punctuation to a word, then go by that. For instance, COLON would come before EXCLAMATION and AMPERSAND would come before PARENTHESIS.

I do believe you simply ignore punctuation when sorting alphabetically.

I read somewhere that ampersand was part of the old English alphabet. It came after the letter Z. Punctuations are not part of the alphabet though.
