I have a 1993 Mercury outboard motor that won't stay tilted up when pulling out of the water. I think the seal may be broke on the piston next to the actual tilt motor but not sure if this is a common problem or not. Does the tilt motor actually hold up the outboard motor as well as the piston next to the tilt motor? No problems exist with the outboard motor, only problem is with the tilt motor and piston attached to the outboard motor. I know it's difficult to understand unless your an outboard motor buff. Also, what is the average price for a tilt on this old of a motor? Any advice would help

First answer has a good idea. On some of the Mercs under the pump, you may see a knob. It may have a label telling which way engages the pump, or, releases it to lift manual.
IF, it not have this, there 4 other things. The o-rings in the rams are bad, a hose is busted/leaking or low on fluid or the valve body in the pump. If, it a hose have someone run the Trim up/down and look for fluid running out. Make sure the pump is full of fluid.
To check the Rams, you need to raise the engine and lock it up. Remove the hoses where they connect to the rams and plug the holes with some brass plugs. Then unlock the engine and it should stay in position, if it goes down slow/fast the o-rings are bad inside. But, be sure it have fluid and you have worked it up/down enough to remove air.
Then all that left is the valve body, could be a stuck check ball or something else. I never seen many problems with a valve body. Usually it was low on fluid with air in the lines. A hose busted. OR the o-rings in the rams.

I am not sure about the Merc's but OMC's had a release valve on the tilt piston - if it was loose it would do the same thing - I think they put this on to over ride the piston if it is not working. Look for a screw at the base of the tilt piston - I would just try and tighten every screw around this area ( I know on the OMC it is left of the tilt piston and a large flat head screw - hope that helps

If the manual tilt release is not your problem......have the unit replaced.....my experience with having them rebuilt has been lousy.......they usually don't perform well after they have been rebuilt. It may cost a little more now to replace the entire unit but will save you in the long run.

This is most often a lubrication problem rather than an adjustment one. There is a linkage rod with a nut that you can adjust,.
