I would like to become a cheerleader for my schools freshman basketball team. I have backround in ballet, jazz, and hip hop dance. When i was in 2nd,3rd,and 4th grade i did camps in the summer for cheerleading. I play many sports and can do splits. The only problem is that I can not do any tumbling other than a roll. I can not even do a cartwheel or handstand. I am hopeing to find someone who can assist me in reaching this goal and maybe we can talk on AIM. My screen name for AIM is partychk101. I am 14 and I am going into 9th grade. Thanks in advance for your help!

You definitely should get into tumbling classes. In the meantime do handstands against the wall. When you do free standing ones later on, do not tuck your head while doing them or you will fall into a forward roll. Do not throw your head back, even though you think you can see the floor better, because it will arch your back and you will have terrible form. A handstand is a perfect line from feet to hips to hands, like the girl in this picture, and you are stretching yourself as tall as you can: http://www.gymnasticsrevolution.com/GymInteractive-Floor-Handstand.htm

A cartwheel relies on having a perfect handstand. Again, a lot of people throw their heads back and cause their backs to arch, which ruins the cartwheel. If you are right handed, you will need to turn your body so that your right side is facing the direction you want to go. (Eventually you will do cartwheels head on, but for now face right if you are a righty). Lift your right leg up and have both hands over head. The process will be right foot, right hand, left hand, left foot. Don't even worry about getting up into the air, per se, just get your body used to putting your hands and feet down in that order. (Or left foot, left, hand, right hand, right foot if you are a lefty.) Here is what a good cartwheel looks like: http://www.gymnasticsrevolution.com/GymInteractive-Floor-Cartwheel.htm

After a while try to get your legs up in that straddle, with your legs, hips, and hands all in line. (Doing straddles while you are in that handstand against the wall is a great drill for cleaning up your cartwheel.) It will come in time. It may take 1000 cartwheels to get them as pretty as you want them to be, but the only way to get them to be pretty is to practice over and over.

Good luck!

Ok so your dance background helps alot. But your gymanstics side is a little weak. If you want to make up for it at tryouts make shure your lould, have sharp motions, jumps are correct and most of all just have fun with it. A roll is better than nothing, my friend made the squad last year by a few points because she decide to use her rolling skills! :D no worries and good luck!

Wow, you heavily have an obsession with the area approximately cheerleaders donning skirts. Why does everybody do something? it fairly is a corporation that provides a feeling of belonging, and in some faculties i might think of it form of feels to ladies love it fairly is a "cool" business enterprise to be a ingredient of. i don't think of cheerleaders pass into thinking "Oh, wow, i'm getting to show off my legs, how plenty greater fantastic can this be?!" there is extremely athleticism to it, as properly as working mutually to be synchronized so it does take ability. i think of the actual question is, what have to procure against cheerleaders?

Go to a gym like Gymnastics Academy of Boston. That's were my sister went and now she can do a backhand spring and a back tuck. She learned in just 2 weeks. When trying out for high school cheer-leading (basketball) I don't think you need to be able to have you back handspring down because it is on a gym floor with no mats.

well i think you should go to your local gymnastics or cheer gym and take some tumbling classes to work on getting a backhand spring. also at tryouts make sure to have really strong motions, facials, and have a good attitude!

good luck!

See what your local gym has to offer, get off into gymnastics and maybe they can give you a foundation on doing flips, etc.
