I am wanting to buy an adapter for my vehicle, the kind that will allow me to use my computer in my vehicle instead of using the battery. I have a 19" Sony Vaio laptop (very big and powerful) so I am wondering what to look for? Will I need a particular voltage, or wattage, or whatever? Obviously I am not up on this sort of thing, so all help is appreciated! I just don't want to ruin my computer, or overload the outlet port, or wharever... thank you!!

You might consider an inverter - converts 12vDC to 110vAC
Then plug your existing laptop ac adapter into the inverter.

The upside is that an inverter is probably cheaper than a mfr's DC-DC adapter, AND you can use it for other devices (never use low-end inverters for high-wattage devices like toasters, blenders, hair-dryers, etc...)

I use an inverter to power my portable office (Laptop + wireless router + VOIP router + all-in-one printer + 5.8ghz cordless phone) - people sure look at me funny when I'm sitting in a coffee shop (w/ internet access) talking on a home phone sipping coffee (little do they know that the phone charges are virtually free).

If you do opt for an inverter, get one with a 400-500 watt peak output (should cost less than $75US). The AC-DC adapter you have probably only draws 90-130watts (but check the bottom of the unit). Peak output is 2x the standard, suggested draw. So a 400watt unit can be safely run drawing 200watts for an extended duration.

Best of success.

look at the voltage and current rating on your AC adapter.

Match that.

You could always buy an adapter of Sony. They probably know which one you need.
