I remember those stories very fondly. They were repeated verbatim by my relatives in Europe so we never had books. The first time I saw a book I couldn't believe my eyes. They were good, sometimes scary and mostly inspirational.

I remember a few.
Was Snow White and Rose Red a Anderson story? About two sisters who are kind to an ugly begger person who turns out to be a prince.
Most of the Disney Classics are retellings of either Anderson or Grimm. The little mermaid, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty come to mind, though I'm sure there are others.

Gosh, I had a complete set when I was a kid and loved them.
There are many classics that I'm sure a lot of you will recognize:
Thumbelina
The Little Mermaid
The Emporer's new clothes
The Ugly Duckling
The Red Shoes
Many more, that not everyone will know, but we all delight in. HCA had 168 tales.
But does everyone know that fairy tales were originally for adults and not children? That many of the original fairy tales were rather scary and scandalous?

I do, I just don't like them so much. Why don't you see him up on Wikipedia? I saw they have his bio and notes on stories etc.
Some of stories mentioned in the first answer are actually old European fairytales, only retold by different writers through the times. Worth reading, though!

The Red Shoes
Who could forget that story? Creeped me out for life. This girl puts red shoes on that won't stop dancing until her father finally has to hack her feet off with a meat cleaver.

the actual tale of the Little Mermaid is extremely unhappy and depressing, as she dies fairly than kill the prince and spare her very own existence. Do do no longer forget that it particularly is a Christian parable on earthly sacrifice for everlasting existence.
