I believe that the best way to fight homophobia is by proving to everyone in your life that being gay is healthy, vital, inspiring, diverse, and harmless.
Any thoughts?

Homophobic people are brainwashed and only see what they want to see. Let me give you an example of brainwashing and you’ll see my point.

A little boy needs an operation. The doctor tells the parents “There’s a 5% to 10% chance your child will die during the operation”.
What would any sensible parents think (A, B or C)?
(A) “My god, my child is going to die”.
(B) “There’s a real possibility my child could die, but the chances are he’ll be fine”.
(C) “5% to 10% is nothing, there’s no way my child will die, I’m not in the least bit worried, things like that don’t happen in my family”.

Any sensible couple would think (B).

The doctor tells a homophobic couple “researchers all over the world say your child has a 5% to 10% chance of being gay”. So what do the homophobic couple think (A, B or C)?

(A) “My god, my kid is going to be gay”.
(B) “There’s a real possibility that my child could be gay, but the chances are he’ll be straight”.
(C) “5% to 10% is nothing, there’s no way my child will be gay, I’m not in the least bit worried, things like that don’t happen in my family”.

Read all the homophobic comments on this site and you’ll quickly see they all go for option "C" every time (brainwashed, they only see what they want to see).

For the most part I absolutely agree with you. Sadly, there really are some that will never get close enough to any gay folks for that understanding to develope. There will continue to be hatred against gay people. We must be willing to reach the majority and overcome the hardore minority as well as those who continue to espouse a relighious belief that the bible is the direct word of God rather than the words of human beings trying to understand God.

Yeah, that's pretty obvious. The problem is some people have never met anyone gay.

I think that educating by example is an excellent, and positive, idea.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will word on some of the recalcitrant bigots, but we can always hope - and pray for them.

I already know that but so many people don't and will probably never realize.

The best way to fight homophobia is to dispell fears. I'm not gay but some of my friends are. I've found that gay people place too much emphasis on thier sexuality. And it can make us uneasy b/c we're not sure how to respond. I usually don't have a need to announce my sexual orientation. Gay people usually do at some poit feel the need to announce it. I guess I understand why. But I think all people should be themselves.
Somthing I've noticed is that sometimes if I'm very accepting of my gay friends they alwas suggest that I may be on the fence about my orientation. I'll point out a good looiking guy to a gay friend and it's like "oh you must be like me" and then the questions start. And I've actually started avoinding gay people because of this. There are just people who hate that will never be ok with you. That's just life. Most straight people get it now. We understand. We'd like to ask you questions we like to hang out with you. Just stop making it the formost thing about you. Some gay people almost seem to wear a sign. And some do wear signs. You're proud,, cool I am to. But I don't wear my C***k on my sleeve. hope the added alittle insight. take care :)

also argue against the "unnatural" statement

almost everything in this world, good or bad, is unnatural.

Pacemakers, glasses, clothes, hotdogs
