This would depend on whether the story is set in the present or the past and the sex of the murderer and victim. I personally like ghost and horror tales set in any era. A nice large house with a basement is always handy. Then someone can go down to the basement for some reason, get beaten to a pulp down there, and get buried someplace in a hurry, under a flower bed or a summer house perhaps. The reason for this? In the past the killers mother/father/ relation/ was swindled out of something by the victims mother/ etc.

well.... you could go with the typical murder-motives: money, revenge, love, jealousy, etc..... but what about.... no reason at all?
why does there always have to be motive? supposing your main character hasnt a motive..... he or she is just wacked? lol does there truly always HAVE to be a motive for murder?
what if there wasnt? wouldnt that make your story a bit more interesting of a read? ...... you're readers (and characters) exploring all possible motives.....so suspicion is on just a small few (characters)..... but if there was a murderer, without a motive.... wouldnt that make your guy harder to find?
i mean, technically... it's still kind of a motive.... to kill just to kill.... (not as in the stupid, 'to commit the perfect crime crap' thats so overplayed anymore) but.... just to do it? theres tons of REAL cases where people were just sick in the head and killed someone just to do it?
That would be a good theme as ---> how do you find a murderer that hasnt any ties to the victim?
if you've limited evidence but no solid leads.... where do you go from there? supposing it was just a random passer-by? came in to town, hacked off some heads, then left for texas or something? you'd have a lot more material to work with plot and suspense-wise if you took that road........
*smiles* just a thought!

How about the murderer had strong feeling for his sister and couldn't bear her in the arms of another man. Murderer gets caught and serves time but upon release moves back into the family home and the ghosts are awoken :)
Best I could come up with atm :) hope this helps......

Person trying to take a child from the mother. Or trying to harm a child... That's the only reason I'd kill...
Or like everyone says, love, revenge, power...
I've read stories of people who are just hateful and kill so they feel like they are in control. Thats all a murder wants is to feel in control.

Well, an arrogant socio-path might try to formulate a fool-proof plan - a perfect murder, to test his/her intellect against the investigators. There would be no particular motive and the victim should ideally be an absolute stranger to the murderer.

is it old english or modern english and are you looking to set your story in the slightly romanticised fictional history similar to the shirlock homes books or something completly accurate.
Do you want it to be an act of revienge, an act of hate, an act of self defence, of defence of another, of jelousy....
It's hard to give a suggestion without knowing more about your story.

Jealousy is the usual reason for murder.
Or it could be to cover up a secret that the victim knows about the murderer...

Just for looking in his direction.
For bumping into him walking down the street.
For wearing the same suit.

After all these years, she still doesn't seem to know where the BIN is to put her bread crusts and her apple cores and her cheese string wrappers.
Then again, she is only 8.
