Depends where the nest is? If it is in a tree, wait until after the Sun goes down, when the Hornets become dormant and spray with a hornet and wasp spray. The spray comes in a natural form made from mint na dwill not hurt the enivronment. If they are in the ground, you have to find their exit hole. Groound hornets have an escape pat hte get away form predators. So they will have a min entry and exit hole and an escape hole. So find both holes after the start of sunset. Fill in the one hole and injet boric acid powder in the open hole and seal over. The boric acid powder is a naturla mineral, so it also will not hurt the environment. Good luck!!

Hornet and wasp spray. Wait until evening and then spray the nest. The spray has a long shot of about 20ft which should put you at a safe distance. You can find this product at most grocery or super centers. Raid makes a good spray.

Hold a lit lighter about 4-6 inches in front of a can of hairspray and depress the button on top to start the flow. You should be able to throw a flame about 3 feet. I would have someone standing by with a first aid kit and a water hose just in case you get carried away.

Toss it in a fire. They are composed of a paper like substance and burn quite nicely. Or you could just place it in the garbage and let the trash service provider haul it to the land fill!

Ditto spitfire's answer. Raid kills them almost instantly and has enough range you can attack the nest somewhat fearlessly.

I just smash them with something like a shovel. You can buy long distance wasp killer at the store though.
