Not a novel, but yes, it's based on a real piece of writing.

It is not based on a novel. It is based on the magazine/newspaper article written by John Carlin called 'A Farewell To Arms'. The screenplay was written by Mark Bomback based on this article he'd read. :-) No novel.

It's not based on a novel. It's based on the three movies that came before it in the '80s-early '90s (Die Hard, Die Hard 2 [Die Harder], Die Hard with a Vengence).
