If Islam is a religion of peace why in the first 100 years did it try to conquer the World?

I do not want to offend anyone but this fact really perplexes me. The early Caliphates spread through conquest across Persia, the Middle East, North Africa and Iberia. If it is a peaceful religion why did this happen?
