You can purchase live traps in which you wouldn't even have to touch the mouse in order to let it go. It is a see through plastic contraption with a trap door. The mouse can go in but it can't come back out. A cracker with peanut butter seems to attract them well. The problem with the snap traps is that it doesn't kill them right away and if you aren't into screaming and gore, then a live trap might be for you. After you've caught the mouse then just take a short drive to someplace wooded or with lots of land and let it go. It's not evil. It's just a mouse.

After finding mice still alive and injured in conventional spring-bail traps, I started using live-catch traps.

To euthanize a live mouse, I put it into a plastic bag and added some freon to displace the air. About three minutes later it stopped breathing, but I left it there for an hour or so, just to be sure, and made sure it wasn't still alive before discarding it.

I did learn one thing; live-trapped and released mice can find their way back into a house from over 300 feet away (caught one with a little chunk missing from his ear, and he showed up a couple days later in the same trap)

So the last time I had to trap mice in our house, I started bringing them to work (~ 2 miles away) and releasing them in a wooded area next to the parking lot.

It really depends on your views on animal cruelty. If you don't mind killing the innocent mouse then I would recommend the bathtub technique or perhaps something a little less prolonged then drowning the animal. If you care a little bit more then a simple drive down the street to the nearest wooded area or field should suffice. Just release the little mouse and you two can go your separate ways about 1/2 mile away from your home is usually good.

All the mouse traps I've had tended to kill the mouse (I know, not very humane). I was left with a bloody mess under my sink...
Maybe you should put it in a bag, drive a couple of miles and leave it in a field or something...

The best thing is to get the snap trap thing. It's a clean kill..

Then you toss the little fella in the trash.

After you catch it, you take it and throw it over the hill or in some ditch somewhere. They're so nasty.

Your neighbour had the right idea but just went about it the wrong way.

Put it in a little plastic bag and throw in trash. Might get stinky if no bag.
