For a first timer, I'd say get a MacBook, which is the 13-inch version. It's simple, small, and portable laptop. The prices range from $1099 to $1499 depending on hard drive capacity and how many GHz. It comes in either white or black.

Go to the nearest Apple Store and take some for a test drive, ask lots of questions and then, decide for yourself.
TIP: Ignore the "Mac Bashers", they are mis-informed; poor things.
