To remain peaceful and non-violent while all sorts of atrocies from killings to rape to general use and abuse etc are going on all around you ,is simply an astounding courageous thing to do.

Most of us both as individuals, societies and nations respond to abuse/violence with abuse/violence.

That you would even suggest the possibility that Ghandi may have been a coward is obviously a testament to your rank ignorance of this man and his life and the horrid challenges he faced in standing peacefully for JUSTICE .

The utter strength of character to keep oneself calm/peaceful in the face of horrendous provocation is indeed courageous.

Ghandi was a genius & he was courageous, but had he chosen any government other than a civilized democracy to attack in the way he did the British, he & his followers would've been slaughtered & we'd never have heard the name Ghandi. One can only imagine what China, the USSR or an Islamic government would've done to him & his followers.

To fight is the easy way out. To try to work through issues and resolve things non-violently is always the more difficult path. Since he took the hard path, I would say he had alot of courage - much more than many leaders today.

Gandhi believed that lasting change could only be achieved through peaceful protest and civil disobedience. He fought many battles using these techniques, and left this world a better place than it was before. I think that alone qualifies him as one of the most courageous and influential leaders of our times.

Courageous. He knew that if they attempted to expel the Brits by force that hundreds of thousands of his people would lose their lives. Hell, I might actually listen if a few arabs stopped killing each other long enough to miss a few meals.
