As I server, I never expect anything more than the gratuity that's been added to the bill for large parties, but a lot of times people will leave a little bit extra if they thought the service was outstanding. I always inform large parties that a gratuity will be added to their bill, I would never want someone to be tricked into double tipping! I'm working for my money to get through college and I wouldn't want to "trick" someone out of their hard earned money, if someone did that to me I'd be livid. It all comes down to the service you received and it's up to you and the other people you are dining with. Being a server is a pretty physically demanding job, and it's nice to know when someone appreciates the extra mile you go to make their dining experience enjoyable.

No, not usually. The server knows ahead of time when the gratuity has been added and will just get it from management when the time is appropriate. If you felt that the service was exceptional or the waitress did an especially good job for you then you could leave a little something extra (I usually try to tip out at 20% anyway). My daughter is a waitress and they are on their feet for long hours, with very little appreciation from either management or customers, get a lot of grief and most of the time try their best. Good luck to you and God Bless.

Usually, restaurants add gratuity for parties of six or more. If 18% gratuity was added to the bill, I would not leave any more. Unless you think they deserved 20% or more, then leave the difference.

Wow, so many cheap bastards on the internet these days. An automatic 18% gratuity is usually used for large groups because large groups tend to rip off the server.
I learned from experience as a server for 3 years that rich people like doctors/lawyers/etc. typically are the cheaper tippers. Whereas the best tippers are other waiters/waitresses/bartenders.
Cough up the green you cheap asses, if you aren't tipping at least 18-20% expect to get horrible service the next time you return to that establishment., or worse- get spit in your food or a dirty fork.

They shouldnt if they know that the gratuity was already added. If they are, they are just being greedy.

You can give additional tip if you think the service was exceptional.

What gets me is that most chinese buffets add the gratuity for parties of 8 or more. SERIOUSLY! its a buffett. you are simply filling up my drink and taking the plates. Not fair.

Nope. Usually it's for groups of 6+ just to ensure that customers play at least that much (since a gratuity of 15% is OPTIONAL but expected and varies depending on quality of service). For large groups, even if service wasn't excellent, it takes effort to serve that many people, so it's a requirement to tip more.

No, unless it was really great service, then round off, e.g., the bill was 195, leave 200, something like that.

If it was lousy service, talk to the manager, don't be railroaded by unreasonable expectations. The 18% is a contract of sorts, they earn it buy providing reasonable service. If the food sucks, that's not the waiters issue, so send the food back, talk to the manager, or "swallow" it, and go somewhere else the next time.

It is not being greedy by expecting more. They are working strictly for your tip. $2.13 an hour or less does not mean a paycheck, it means they are depending on you to pay their bills, feed their children, and put clothes on their back. Think about what you would want after working your butt off at a nine hour shift with no breaks. People don't give restaurant workers enough credit. Remember they often have to give 30% of their earnings for the night to the bartender and busboys so it is hard to walk out with enough to make up for how many hours they work.

I don't believe so. They add the gratuity so that they ensure that they get it, I don't believe you owe anything extra. I could be wrong. Usually they add that gratuity if it's a large group of people.

All restaurants requires patrons to pay gratuity, automatically adds to the bill. The reason why they add it is because a lot of patrons don't leave tips and most patrons always rude to the restaurant, so they decided to add it to their bill.
