If the sun is rising, then the direction of the sun is east, opposite the sun is west, 90 degrees left of the sun is north, and 90 to the right is south.
If the sun is falling its the opposite. The sun is in the west, opposite is the east. 90 Degrees right is north, 90 degrees left is south.

also, depending on what hemisphere you're on, you can tell which direction is which just by looking at shadows. if you are on the northern hemisphere, a shadow will never fall on the south. even at noon, you will have a slight shadow. If you are in the southern hemisphere, vice versa. if you are directly on the equator, you'll just have to fallow the rule that the sun rises in the east, sets in the west, and 90 degrees from that is north and south. remember, if you look at a compass rose in a clockwise pattern, the letters will be a abbreviation for "never eat soggy waffles"

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. So get up early and see which way is east. Once you have that, you can figure the other 3 out.

If you have an analog watch, you can line up the sun halfway between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock marking. The 6 o'clock marking will point north if your on the northern hemisphere or south if you are on the southern hemisphere.
